We caught up with Rebecca Slaughter in the trendy RiNo neighborhood at a local Denver favorite, the Ramble Hotel. Rebecca is a full time photographer focused on fashion, lifestyle, and beauty for brands and individuals. If you spend any time scrolling through her Instagram feed (trust us, you'll want to) you immediately get a sense of her edgy photography and unapologetic style. Not only does she have an incredible eye and vision, but she also has some noteworthy advice to give. When Rebecca walks into a room you can feel her presence and the confidence she exudes, which is why we couldn't wait to sit down with her. We asked her to dish out her best advice about travel, beauty, fashion and what it means to be a strong woman. Read our full interview below.
V: East Coast or West Coast?
RS: West Coast baby! There’s something about the West Coast that is such natural energy for me. When I’m in Denver I constantly get asked if I’m from LA and happily a Colorado native I do enjoy all of the beauty and industry California has to offer.
V: Where are we going, to a city or the beach?
RS: Beach. All the shooting and chill vibes, need I say more?
V: Favorite place you’ve traveled to?
RS: One of my most asked questions, and everyone is always surprised with my response but I just love MEXICO! I have traveled the world and always find myself in Mexico a few times a year! I love the vibe, the language, the food, and it’s very easy to travel to. Join me?
V: Bucket list place for 2019?
RS: This is tough because my heart really isn’t set on traveling as much as it is on the adventure of my career. Most countries I’ve been to have been because of photography so I almost love the excitement of what project will bring me where next than even a planned vacation. If my work doesn’t take me there however, I need to spend more time in Europe!
V: What’s in your luggage when you’re traveling somewhere for a photoshoot?
RS: When traveling somewhere for a shoot I bring the essentials, my Nikon D810 and a couple of simple lens options usually does it. If I need any other gear I'll rent it out! I also have to make sure my outfits are on point! I never go anywhere without snakeskin boots and a good blazer.
V: Any packing tips and tricks?
RS: I typically pack all of my outfits in color coordination with each other to mix and match if needed. My schedule at home or out of town is constantly throwing curve balls that require last minute outfit changes and sometimes with little resources! It is necessary to bring outfits you can dress up or down. Always bring extra undies and socks, quit packing all of the jeans you own and just know you always need that one going out look. A good leather jacket goes a long way.
V: What’s the one thing you don’t travel anywhere without packing in your bag?
RS: The one thing I can't travel without are chargers! I wrap all my chargers and cords up in a bag inside of my suitcase so I'm never without power or connection, I'm always working on the go and can't risk access to my electronics if I ever need to work or be in touch with a client! I also ALWAYS have my journal and my current read.
V: Favorite beauty product you are currently using?
RS: My favorite beauty product right now would be my REN skincare toner, I use it once a day to keep my skin fresh between long days of wearing makeup but my beauty product obsessions go way beyond just one thing! I am also completely obsessed with my IT Cosmetics CC cream, it’s a lifesaver when it comes to light coverage, skin protection, and a solid base layer. I also never leave home without a good lip color and some lashes!
V: Best advice for capturing a killer photo?
RS: Trust your vision. When you feel that you got it, you got it. Move on to the next shot, look, scene, etc. Don’t overdo it just trust that you got it.
V: Best beauty advice?
RS: Take. care. of. your. skin. Drink. Water. Know your face! Not everything works for you but the things that work - WERK.
V: Best fashion advice?
RS: Know your body type! Trends will come and go but if you know how to dress for your shape you will always look A1. I personally stay business casual because I find it both comforting and empowering. A girl on a mission stays on it!
V: Best advice to other women out there?
RS: Women are the most magnificent creatures, we are eloquent yet powerful, feminine and hard working. We are so vast and diverse the best thing we can do is invest in ourselves and the women among us. There’s nothing more powerful than a determined female with a tribe to back her. If you aren’t that woman be her, and if you need a tribe - seek them.
